06 Feb What is Cataract?
A cataract is the leading cause of curable blindness in the world. Additionally, most commonly performed eye surgery is the cataract surgery. Some of the symptoms of the cataract are impaired vision, unilateral double vision, dull color vision, and yellow vision. It is congenital in the babies and it may be seen in the infants, but the most common type of cataract is the age-related cataract which is seen after the age of 40 or 50. The only treatment option for the cataract is surgery. There is no treatment choice other than surgery. A cataract operation is very convenient when compared with other surgeries. The eye is anesthetized by drops and the surgery lasts approximately ten minutes. Patients do not stay in the hospital after surgery, can go back to their homes on the same day and return their daily lives starting from the very next day.
We usually perform Femto laser cataract surgery in the operation. Its biggest advantage is to be able to apply procedures inside the eye at a micron level with the sensitivity which can not be achieved by our eyes or hands. Since it is bladeless, opening incisions inside the eye is very smooth. We use the laser again to dissolve the cataract. Since the window opened in the lens is very straight, centralization chance of the lenses inside the eye is very high both during the operation and for long term, after the surgery. We recommend Femto laser especially for short and far sight “premium” lenses and trifocal “smart” lenses. Another advantage of the Femto laser is aid in fixing astigmatism of up to 1.5 diopters. There are many types of lenses. We aim to enable our patients not to wear glasses for farsightedness when we use mono-focal lenses but they need glasses for nearsightedness. Another option is toric or “astigmatic” lenses to eliminate patients’ astigmatism. Other options are called “multifocal or trifocal” which also provides middle sight and we can implant far, middle or near lenses with cataract surgeries. With today’s technology, many people would like to see well in far, middle and near sights, without interruption. Today, trifocal lenses have the infrastructure to provide this aim, so patients may continue their lives without glasses requirement for many functions.
